Have you ever experienced a toothache?
There can be several reasons why this has occurred but a decayed tooth is the reason most adults and children will develop tooth pain. Other factors include an infected nerve or root of your tooth, a chipped or broken tooth, grinding or clenching, or infected gums. There could be a range of toothache symptoms that can show up as well such as throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, a bad taste in your mouth, a fever, or pain when pressure is applied. Not every patient will have the same symptoms however depending on the type of toothache treatment needed; some symptoms are true signs that something is wrong.
Consistent check-ups with your general dentist is the best way to see early signs of issues with your teeth or gums, however you can develop tooth or gum pain at any time. During your check-up visit with your general dentist, your dentist and hygienist will evaluate your teeth and gums at every visit for any signs of decay or other signs that a problem is present or may cause an issue at anytime. During this visit is the best time to start treatment the same day; this can avoid any future pain that can develop. Early signs of tooth decay and gum disease do not always show signs or cause pain. Your dental assistant or hygienist will first take an x-ray of the area of concern; this gives the dentist a visual aide that the human eye can’t see.
Treatment that may be recommended by your general dentist is a filling, root canal, crowns, extractions, or gum therapy. If you are experiencing any time of pain, you should seek toothache treatment right away to avoid it getting worse. Some patients may develop swelling of their face and jaw when an abscess is present; which is sign of an infection that needs to be taken care of immediately. Decay is bacteria that eats away at a healthy tooth, when the bacteria travels to the inside of the tooth is when a root canal would be needed. If you have a broken tooth, your dentist may recommend a crown and build-up. If a crown is needed you will leave with a temporary crown while a permanent crown is created.
Home Treatment for Toothache – The best way to prevent a toothache is for consistent oral check-ups at least twice a year with your general dentist and hygienist as well as good oral health care at home. You should be brushing a minimum of two times per day or after eating, and flossing at least once a day. You should also avoid any high sugar food or drinks as this can toothache cause issues as it sits on your teeth. Using fluoride toothpaste and getting fluoride treatments during your cleanings with your hygienist is a great way to help keep the bacteria at bay while also helping with any sensitivity you may have.
